Although following local or state courts, or even the Supreme Court can be an exciting journalistic career, this is only one of many types of legal journalism.

Legal journals published by bar associations and law schools are a great place to use journalistic skills in regard to the legal world. Trade journals focusing on certain areas of the law are another great way to enter into the field of journalism. However, just about every area of our society connects with the law. Politicians are writing the law, the police are enforcing the law, and the business world is daily having to deal between the lines of the law while trying to maximize their profits.
Other types of trade journals will often have journalistic legal writing from time to time as the law governs every type of career or hobby that exists. Business magazines will have articles about legal trouble among top executives, workplace discrimination, and insider trading. Religious newsletters may speak to issues such as the separation of church and state or the expected rulings by the top courts regarding abortion.
Entertainment and legal journalism is seen in many areas. Celebrity magazines cover the legal woes of famous people, sports magazines cover divorces and arrests of the top players, and even the front page news sometimes carries snippets of celebrities’ legal troubles.
Politics is another area of journalism that is closely involved with legal writing. Journalistic legal writing can include changes in the law, the legality or constitutionality of legislation, and questionable actions by political figures. Appointments of judges are a further issue which involves both the law and politics and whose press coverage is ubiquitous.

With the frequent use of the internet for news stories, online news sites in conjunction with newspapers, magazines, and television news networks have become very popular. Even legal blogs, written by nonprofessionals are visited by thousands on a regular basis. Journalistic legal writing is one aspect of journalism that touches all varieties of medium and applies to everyone’s lives in some form or fashion.
