Most people who have a passion for their jobs want to do exceed expectations and place a fresh new angle on their work. With journalists, it’s no different. Those who succeed are given prestigious awards that celebrate their work and career. Some of the most prestigious journalism awards include:
National Journalism Awards
The Pulitzer Prize Journalism – The Pulitzer Prize is a very prestigious award given for newspaper and online journalism, musical and literary composition. For journalism, the prize can be awarded in several different categories, including public service, feature writing, editorial writing, national and international reporting, and more. The award is given through the means of a committee who votes on particular nominations.
The Peabody Award – This award is one of the oldest and most prestigious awards given within the fields of broadcast journalism – such as radio and television broadcasting. It was first given in the year 1941, and is still a very celebrated award. Just a few of the stations that have won this award include NBC, ABC, HBO, and CBS.
Political Journalism Award
The Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism – This award honors journalists who have reported on political or economic stories with the highest regard for ethics. For instance, just a few of the people who have earned this award include a journalist who helped work to expose dishonesty on his college’s president and a particular news station for keeping the identity of Kobe Bryant’s accuser out of the media.
Magazine Journalism Award
National Magazine Awards – These awards have been given since 1966, and are the highest form of prestigious acknowledgement magazine journalists can receive. They are the magazine industry’s equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. Just a few of the magazines that have received this award include The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Vanity Fair. Like the Pulitzer Prize, this prize can be given in a number of different categories, including freelance journalism, feature story, critic reviews, and more.
Fellowship Journalism Award
Niemann Fellowship Awards & John S. Knight Fellowship Awards – These awards are similar, with the first being given at Harvard and the second being given at Stanford. They recognize the work of writers, editors, photographers and more that have more than five years of experience in the industry, and who have shown outstanding work ability.
These are just a few of the wonderful awards that are given to journalists in so many different categories. For most of these awards, there is a committee that votes on the recipient based on work excellence. To receive any one of these awards is considered a high honor, and the recipient should be very proud.
